Brand vs Performance Marketing: How the Two Work Together

Performance marketing is paid media measured against actions like leads or sales. Brand marketing builds preference over time. Here is what each does, and what goes wrong when you run only one.

Brand vs Performance Marketing: How the Two Work Together

Performance marketing is paid advertising where you pay for, and measure against, a specific action: a lead, a sign-up, a purchase. Brand marketing builds how well people know you and how much they prefer you over time, and it is harder to tie to one sale.

They answer different questions. A business that runs only one of them tends to hit the same wall.

What does performance marketing measure?

A handful of standard metrics:

  • ROAS (return on ad spend): revenue from the ads divided by what you spent on them.
  • CPL (cost per lead): ad spend divided by the number of leads.
  • CTR (click-through rate): clicks divided by impressions.
  • Conversion rate: the share of visitors who complete the action you wanted.

A worked example, with illustrative numbers and not a client result. You spend Rp10,000,000 and the ads bring in Rp40,000,000 of revenue. ROAS is 4. If the same spend produced 100 leads, CPL is Rp100,000.

A ROAS of 4 sounds good until you check your margin. If your margin is 20 percent, revenue of Rp40,000,000 leaves Rp8,000,000 before any other cost, and the ads cost Rp10,000,000. Know your break-even number before you read any report.

Where does performance marketing stop working?

Performance campaigns are good at capturing demand that already exists and at testing which message converts. They have a harder time when the audience has no reason to trust the brand yet. The click can happen and the purchase does not.

No amount of optimisation fixes an offer that is unclear.

Where does brand marketing stop working?

Without measurement, brand spend is hard to defend in a budget review, because its effect shows up late and in several places. A brand programme with no way to tell whether it is working tends to be the first line cut.

How do brand and performance marketing work together?

Brand decides who you are talking to and what you say. Performance tests which version of that message converts, and the results go back into the brand work. A message that wins in tests is evidence about positioning, not just about an ad.

Our own service structure follows that order: Strategy and Positioning first, then Performance Marketing, including campaign optimisation and A/B testing. It is the same logic as above, written as a list of services.

What should you check before you spend on ads?

Five questions, in this order:

  • Can you state your offer in one sentence?
  • Do you know the ROAS or CPL you need to break even, after margin?
  • Is conversion tracking installed and tested?
  • Do you know which audience you are buying, and why they would care?
  • Who looks at the numbers each week, and what will they change based on what they see?

If you cannot answer the first two, wait before spending. If you want to work through the rest, get in touch.
